Curriculum Documents
As a Scottish state school, we follow the Curriculum for Excellence. This document organises learning across eight curricular areas:
Literacy and English;
Numeracy and Mathematics;
Health and Wellbeing;
Expressive Arts;
Religious and Moral Education;
Science;
Social Studies;
and, Technologies.
Experiences and Outcomes
Each curricular area has a set of ‘Experiences and Outcomes’ statements supported by the ‘Principles and Practice’ of teaching in this area. These statements are organised into levels (Early, First, Second, Third and Fourth) and can be found by clicking here or downloading below.
Roughly speaking,
– Early Level equates to Nursery and Primary 1;
– First Level equates to Primary 2 to Primary 4;
– Second Level equates to Primary 5 to Primary 7;
– Third and Fourth Levels cover Secondary 1-6.
Naturally, these levels will be achieved earlier or later for some children.
Benchmarks
The Experiences and Outcomes are supported by the ‘Benchmarks’ which explain in more detail what children need to have experienced or done to achieve that learning.
The Benchmarks are used by teachers when using their professional judgement to assess whether children have achieved, or are on track to achieve, a Level (Early, First, Second, etc.) at any time. Links to the Benchmarks documents can be found by clicking here or downloading below.
